Troubleshoot Issues During Setup

Help Messages and Codes

If a help message with a code appears in the app, get detailed troubleshooting help from our interactive troubleshooting tool for Nest cameras and doorbells.

Connection Issues

If you can’t find your Wi-Fi network, or if your camera has trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi, try these steps:

  1. Retry Connection: Wait a few minutes, then try to connect your camera again.
  2. Move Camera Closer: Move your camera closer to your Wi-Fi router to improve the signal.
  3. Reduce Interference: Reduce wireless interference.
  4. Restart Router: Try to restart your router.
  5. Manually Enter Network: If you have a hidden Wi-Fi network, you need to type in the network name (SSID) manually. For more tips, visit our Troubleshoot adding Nest camera to the app article.

Power Issues

Signs that your camera doesn't get enough power include:

  • Your camera won’t turn on.
  • You get a message or status in the app that tells you there isn’t enough power.
  • Wi-Fi connection and video quality can be reduced when there isn’t enough power. Try these steps:
  • Check Cable and Outlet: If your camera uses a cable to stay powered, check that the cable and power outlet work properly. Use another compatible cable or power outlet with your camera to check if it works.
  • Recharge Battery: If your camera is battery-powered, recharge it when the battery is low. Ensure it’s seated correctly on its stand when you remount it.

Video Quality Issues

If your camera has video delays or lag, it’s usually a sign of a weak Wi-Fi connection or insufficient power. Try these steps:

  • Improve Wi-Fi Signal: Move your camera closer to your Wi-Fi router to improve the signal.
  • Reduce Interference: Reduce wireless interference.
  • Check Power Supply: Ensure the cable and power outlet are working properly. Use another compatible cable or power outlet with your camera to check if it works.
  • Recharge Battery: If your camera is battery-powered, recharge it when the battery is low. Ensure it’s seated correctly on its stand when you remount it. If your camera’s video is distorted, try these steps:
  • Clean Lens: Dust off the camera lens.
  • Adjust Angle: Angle the camera to avoid direct sunlight.
  • Protect from Weather: Place your camera somewhere shady and protected from extreme weather conditions. While outdoor cameras are built to work outside, extreme temperatures can affect video quality. For more tips, visit our Troubleshoot Nest camera video distortion article.

Get More Installation Help

The app provides basic installation instructions to mount or install your Nest camera. For more detailed instructions, select your camera below.

Install or Mount Nest Cam (Battery)

The Home app provides detailed instructions for installation. You have a few basic choices for installation:

  • Wall Mount: Use the included wall mount.
  • Stand: Use the Nest Cam stand (sold separately).
  • Third-Party Mount: Use any third-party mount with a 1/4"-20 thread, though it may affect performance. Watch the installation video.

Install with the Stand

The optional Nest Cam stand is ideal for placing your camera indoors on a shelf, desk, or counter. Just connect the camera to the stand and plug in the power cord. The stand provides continuous power, required for 24/7 video history if you have a Nest Aware Plus subscription.

Install with the Magnetic Mount

The magnetic mount gives you a couple of options:

  • Metal Surface: The magnetic plate can hold your camera on a metal surface (like a refrigerator) inside or outdoors, without screws.
  • Wall Mount: Attach the wall plate with screws, then secure the magnetic plate onto the backplate. Both options allow for power with any accessory like weatherproof cables or battery power.

Use the Secure Loop

If placing your Nest Cam higher than 6.5 ft (2m), use the secure loop accessory to prevent the camera from falling if knocked off the mount. If not included, contact support to request one or use the Wasserstein anti-theft mount available on the Google Store. Installation Steps:

  1. Screw Loop: Screw the end of the loop into the threads on the bottom of the camera by hand, then tighten with a flat head screwdriver.
  2. Attach Loop: Place the loop around the magnetic mount where it meets the wall. The loop should slip behind the faceplate.
  3. Tighten Loop: Pull the tab to tighten the loop until it’s snug, ensuring the tab is accessible for easy camera removal for charging.
  4. Mount Camera: Place your camera on the magnetic plate.
  5. Check View: Confirm the camera covers the desired view in the app.

Install with the Weatherproof Cable

Use the weatherproof cables to keep your camera plugged in, even outdoors. Available in 16 ft (5 m) or 33 ft (10 m) lengths, they can be plugged into a weatherproof outlet and come with clips, screws, and wall anchors for a clean install. Paint the cables to blend in. Purchase from the Google Store.

Tools Needed for Installation

  • Power Drill and Bits: To drill holes in the wall.
  • Phillips Screwdriver: For screw insertion.
  • Ladder: To reach higher mounting locations.
  • Caulk and Caulk Gun: For sealing holes to prevent leaks.
  • Tape Measure: For measuring accurate placements.
  • Pencil: For marking drill points.
  • Level: For ensuring level installation.

Install Nest Cam with Floodlight

The Home app guides you through the installation process. Follow the instructions carefully for proper setup. Watch the installation video. Steps:

  1. Turn Off Power: Ensure power is turned off at the breaker.
  2. Mount Floodlight: Mount the floodlight with screws.
  3. Connect Wires: Use the provided wire connectors to connect your camera’s wires to the corresponding wires in your junction box.
  4. Install Floodlight: Follow app instructions for installation.
  5. Turn On Power: Turn power back on at the breaker.
  6. Adjust Floodlight: Adjust your floodlight settings in the Home app.

Install Nest Cam (Wired)

Nest Cam (wired) can be placed on a flat surface like a shelf or wall-mounted. Detailed instructions are in the Home app. Watch the installation video. Steps:
